Empowering the Church in Pakistan: Insights from Rev Dr Qaiser Julius

On the Langham Live October 2024 call, we had the privilege of being joined by Rev Dr Qaiser Julius, Langham Scholar, Langham author and Langham Preaching coordinator.

Qaiser delved into the rich cultural, linguistic, and religious landscape of Pakistan, his home country, particularly about the challenges and opportunities facing the Christian community there.

About Pakistan: A Land of Rich Heritage

Pakistan, nestled in South Asia, is often recognised for its diverse heritage—boasting stunning landmarks like K2, the world’s second-highest mountain. With a population exceeding 240 million and over 70 languages spoken, it is a melting pot of cultures and communities. However, it also constitutes a predominantly Muslim nation, which presents unique challenges for its Christian population.

Qaiser hails from a Christian family in Lahore, Pakistan’s second-largest city. Originally aspiring to become an economist, it was through ministry of ‘Campus Crusade for Christ’ that he came to faith.

The Reality of Christianity in Pakistan

Living as a Christian in such a Muslim-majority country is not without its challenges. Despite constitutional freedoms, misconceptions about Christianity are prevalent, often leading to difficulties, especially in university settings. Many young Christians face scrutiny and questions about their loyalty to the country, as stereotypes suggest they should seek to leave for the West. Yet Qaiser proudly affirms, “I’m a Pakistani; this is my country.”

The Church’s Role and Its Challenges

The Pakistani church is a beacon of hope despite facing opposition and discrimination. It visibly exists within the country, yet it is often fractured, lacking unity. Qaiser mentions that many Christians come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, which complicates their influence in society and politics. Strengthening the voice of the Church and fostering unity among denominations is crucial.

The Impact of Langham Partnership

Qaiser’s association with Langham began when he attended a preaching workshop in 2004 led by Dr Chris Wright. Then through the Langham Scholars’ programme, he pursued his PhD, providing him with the necessary skills to contribute to theological education in Pakistan. As president of the Open Theological Seminary, he focuses on enhancing the quality of theological education and empowering future leaders of the church.

Innovative Approach to Theological Education

The Open Theological Seminary employs a context-based learning model, allowing students to remain in their communities while accessing educational resources. Currently, around 10,000 students are enrolled, marking a significant achievement for theological education in Pakistan. The seminary also offers programmes targeting the younger demographic, fostering their understanding of Christian identity.

Celebrating 20 Years of Langham Preaching in Pakistan

As Qaiser prepares to celebrate two decades of Langham Preaching in Pakistan, he reflects on the profound impact the programme has had. The popularity and effectiveness of Langham’s approach have transformed preaching in local churches, evidenced by graduates reporting improved engagement and understanding in their congregations.

Continue to Pray

Qaiser exemplifies the determination and courage of Christians in Pakistan. His experience underscores the vital role of education and community support in advancing the Church’s mission amidst adversity.

Please pray for Qaiser, especially in his role as president of the Open Theological Seminary, and for Langham and it seeks to equip future leaders through its programmes.

Prayer Requests

Qaiser asks us to pray for the following:

  • the economic situation in Pakistan is very unstable and it is affecting a lot especially the salaried people.
  • the government compliances are becoming a huge burden for the Non-Government Organisations especially Christian Organisations.
  • the National Preachers’ Conference in Islamabad on 15-16 November where 400 preachers are expected across Pakistan. Additionally, we are also celebrating 20 years of Langham Expository Preaching ministry in Pakistan on the second day of the conference.
