This year, Langham enabled a Taiwanese Scholar to spend valuable months writing a contextual book on Proverbs.
Langham Scholar Shirley Ho divided her six months between Tyndale House and Ridley Hall (Cambridge) and Wycliffe Hall (Oxford). Shirley reported that there were “excellent and complete resources and books” at these “inspiring” UK libraries.
She completed a first draft of her book (70,000 words) due to “no distractions from work, ministry, health or family issues or responsibilities”.
God’s presence
Shirley felt God’s presence every day, never missed church on a Sunday and met new friends and Scholars.
She explained that this UK residency contributes to her on-going ministry in the Majority World.
Many South East Asian countries have issues such as “social justice, poverty and sickness”, whereas Taiwan may be considered a “progressive country”.
Issues relevant to Taiwan
“My book on Proverbs addresses the issues relevant in Taiwan like: the pursuit of physical pleasure, individualism, self-determinism, anti-traditionalism and secularism”, Shirley explained.
Shirley paid tribute to Langham Executive Assistant Elizabeth Hitchcock, who “did superbly in terms of communication” with her and the places she stayed.
This residency is part of Langham Scholar’s post-doctoral training programme, in which graduated Scholars are supported in further research and studies.
