Rico Villanueva connects lament with thankfulness on Northern Ireland tour

As a Supporter Development Officer, I have the unique opportunity to present the transformative work of Langham to various church groups. One shining example of this mission is Dr Federico G. Villanueva, affectionately known as Rico.

With a PhD earned through a Langham Scholarship, Rico wears many hats: he serves as the Regional Commissioning Editor for Langham Publishing; the Scholar Care Coordinator for current Langham Scholars in Asia; and is also a respected lecturer and author of many books.

Recently, it was my privilege to welcome Rico to Northern Ireland for four enriching days of events, where his insights left a lasting impact. Rico openly shared his personal journey with depression, which became the foundation for his seminar titled “Lord, I’m Depressed: The Lament Psalms and Depression.”

Acknowledging lament

Drawing from the powerful lament of Psalm 130, he delivered an encouraging presentation that emphasised the importance of acknowledging sadness and lament in our lives as prerequisites for experiencing true joy. However, he noted that the journey from sadness to joy can often feel like a prolonged wait.

Rico’s visit didn’t stop there. He also inspired a separate gathering of Langham supporters, at the Amy Carmichael Community Centre in Belfast.

During his presentation, Rico shared a touching anecdote about meeting Langham’s founder, Rev Dr John Stott – while he was working on his PhD in the UK in the early 2000s.

Encouraged by John Stott

When Rico explained to Stott that his PhD was on the lament Psalms, Stott said it was a very important topic, and much needed for the Church. This short remark inspired Rico to keep going in his studies.

In his presentation in Belfast, Rico offered profound insights into his work in the Philippines, which were greatly appreciated by the attendees. The following day, he preached at the Lower and Upper Clonaleese Presbyterian Churches, during their harvest thanksgiving services.

His expertise in the lament Psalms allowed him to beautifully connect themes of lament and thankfulness, reminding us that even in our most joyous moments, there are others who may be struggling.

Not just a 2D figure

Spending time with Rico changed him from a 2D figure on a PowerPoint slide into a vibrant, relatable individual with a wealth of knowledge and understanding. His books, previously just names on a cover, now resonate with the depth of his lived experiences. I wholeheartedly recommend them.

Rico’s visit served as a powerful reminder of the importance of lament in our lives—a necessary component that not only deepens our understanding of joy but also fosters empathy for those around us. It was a privilege to learn from him, and I am eager to see how his insights will influence many people long after his departure.
